Earth Ship.

I've been in an Earth Ship. I sat and had dinner.
Dan Wolf was the man's name, and he lived with his Saint of a wife for a little under a year in a school buss while the Earth Ship was being built.
And even while we sat there, in the ship, it was still yet to be finished with exposed tire walls and blankets acting as walls.

But I was smitten, listening to this crazy man talk about his house as we sat, basically in a dirt cave, I dreamed abut living in one.

For some reason I have brought up the Earth Ship in different conversations like three times this past week. So this is my informative blog to tell you what a an Earth Ship is. . . You don't have to live in one, but you should be aware of your options, thus, maybe, opening your eyes to the possibility of a house that doesn't follow the norm and blends in with your neighbors house, and turns skylines into a sea of repetition and concrete.

An Earth Ship is a home, free and in depended of outside help.
No Electrical, so gas, no sewage . . . off the grid.
And all made from natural or recycled materials.

The majority of the ship are large windows, using the sun's energy to heat and provide energy for the house, and it is popular but not necessary to have the portion of the ship that is not windows buried into the earth and the earth cools it down.

The Rain water is collected, filtered for drinking, after the gray water leaves the sink it is used again to water plants, and then used again for toilet water,  and the black water that leaves the bathroom, is sent to a septic tank then used to water the plants.

Old tires line the walls, packed full of cement, this insulates the ship.

And it is focused around growing food year round, providing beautiful greenhouse spaces.

And while I say "recycled materials" and "Cave" don't be fooled, these homes, once completed are so charming, without following straight lined wooden structure you are able to move walls in curves quite easy and with the home a bit buried it starts to, at times, resemble a hobbit hole.

The roof for the Earth Ship I sat in was created by filling your tire rooms full of dirt and then pouring cement and placing reinforcement bars over the top, then, removing the dirt.
This one looks like they have found a way around that with this one: spanning the re-bar the full length and filling the holes.

Holes will be put in the top of the domes for a fireplace, or small sky lights.

The Light! I love the sun, the large windows.
And then growing all your plants and heating your home with a wood burning stove.
It seems like a ton of work, but I dream of living in one. . . Or maybe a hybrid of this, and that. .  .I think they are wonderful.
