Currently sitting barefoot about 15 feet away from the open air poring rain storm with lightning and thunder filling the skies. Andie is behind me at a table writing in her journal and eating a pancake and fresh fruit for a late dinner snack.
We are in Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia. To get here we bought a ticket for only 4 US dollars to ride 6 hours on a bus filled with Cambodians and a driver with death in his eyes and a need to let everyone on the street know that he was on the road.
Andie and I were seat number one and two, which means we were directly behind the driver and had a massive windshield view of the streets we were going down.
The driver would speed down the road and not slow down for anything, he would merely honk his horn and run them off the road. He honked his horn every 30 seconds, if not, more for 6 hours.
Our rest stops consisted of hot muggy food places where they were saleing turtles, and fried spiders. Both of which sound like pure vomit after being on a wild bus.
And and I didn't get carsick (surprise surprise) but my knee was cramping up and Andie was, what was the word she used? - Hyperventilating.
I don't think any of you would understand what a bus ride like this was like unless you have traveled here, and I'm at a loss of words to describe it. The worse part of the ride is when a helpless dog crossing the road stopped mid tracks and our driver laid on the horn and kept his constant pase, in his straight line, and ran the dog over.
Andie and I both jumped, then gasped, and Andie said she could feel the blood all run out of her head. It was awful. (with maybe a slight hint of comedy, thinking of our reaction, of the driver's taste for blood and the Cambodian roads in general)
Beautiful beautiful county side though, rice fields, farming town, floating villages, houses up on stilts, children playing in mud, little motorcycles transporting huge loads of, of something. It was beautiful.
So it was a love hate ride for me, Andie couldn't stand the entire thing.
But we are here in this massive city and excited to explore tomorrow.
There is a great "killing fields" museum that we could see, but when learning that "most were killed with a shovel or ax blow to the back of the head" . . we both just don't want to do it. But after the dog incident, maybe we can handle it -We'll see.
