While we all were enjoying the weather (and a glorious victory over dominating in the annual 4th of July wiffle ball challenge against the standifirds), all in the front yard, that's when we saw it. .. . flames at the end of the road.
Careless children with their fireworks? Arsonist with a grudge towards Humphrey's? A deranged transient who forgot to stomp out his cigarette? . . there was no way of knowing and little time to analyze, the fire was headed for the homes and traveling swiftly with the wind.
Panicked neighbors swarmed the streets in terror and a call to 911 was placed, but we knew it would be a while before they came and the homes of the faithful families on canyon view drive were in a panic and couldn't wait.
Then, when we all thought the worst was at our finger tips who arrives on the scene? The man, nay the stallion, Nathan Douglas Evans rounds the corner with a hoedad in one hand and a shovel in the other- his faithful dog Unita at his side. Putting all fear aside he stood up to the flames digging trenches and smothering flames. . Other men tried to step in and help but they were nothing compared to the strength that Nathan had.
His dog circling around, almost to say to the on-lookers and children "stay away"
We were all in awe and forever grateful when the fire ceased to spread, when the home owners could take another breath knowing that it was going to be ok, the fire was under control, and the last bit of fire dwindled in the twilight, at that very minute of security, the Lone Peak fire department turned the corner.
Once in a while you get to witness someone who for whatever reason, thinks more of others then themselves, and is willing to step up when others shrink. A hero, a man among men.

Scary... and how random to see you in Jackson? Wasn't that river awesome? I felt alive as the 42 degree water hit me in the face. And went down my beautiful yellow jacket.
I feel safer knowing Nate Evans is always looking out for me and my family.
Nate is a true American hero. I knew I liked that guy for a reason! That is scary that your neighborhood almost started on fire though...
we were going to get a drink, then, BOOM!
